Barracks. At first, inmates slept on straw-filled pallets placed directly on the dirt floors. The barracks themselves were prefabricated horse barns. Over 500 inmates lived in an area designed for 52 horses.
Later, bunk beds were constructed getting inmates off the ground, but leaving very little floor space.
Inmates selected for gassing were given showers first. The Nazis discovered that Zyclon B gas was more effective on warm, moist bodies.
